The purposes of this study were to obtain basic data for dental caries experience and to utilize these data for motivating oral health promotion and activating oral health care programme in preschool children of metropolitan. The data of dental caries experience of pre-school children aged from 3 to 5 years in Gwangju city were obtained from the chart for dental health assessment surveyed from 1993 to 1996. The subjects were 2,787 children in 1993, 2,625 in 1994, 3,523 in 1995 and 1,633 in 1996, respectively. The items of survey were inputted and analysed and then, calculated df, dt, ft, and dft rates and dft index in deciduous dentition, and DF, DT, FT, MT, and DMFT rates and DMFT index in permanant dentition.
The results were as follows;
1. Average percentages were 83.4% in df rates, 51.1% in dt rates, 49.0% in ft rates and 29.0% in dft rates. 2. An average score of dft index was 5.60.
3. Average percentages were 10.5% in DF rates, 62.8% in DT rates, 37.3% in FT rates, 0.0% in MT rates and 11.8% in DMFT rates.
4. An average score of DMFT index was 0.18.
